Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920173087

President. there has been a good deal of discussion in recent months. both by the media and public officials. of the unjust policies of the Soviet Union toward its Jewish community. While I certainly share this concern for what is a very real and disturbing situation. I believe we should not overlook the similar plight of Jews elsewhere. Particularly distressing have been the recent reports of discrimination and mistreatment of the small Jewish community of Syria. The 4.000 Jews of Syria have come under a variety of restrictive acts and policies which do not affect nonJewish Syrians. For example. Jews are not permited to emigrate or travel abroad. Movement even within the country is restricted. In addition.
