Polish men who had been deprived of their nation joined the fighting forces of other nations during World War I. Peace. it was hoped. would bring a reconstituted Polish State. In June 1917. refugees and emigre volunteers formed a Polish Army in France under the direction of Gen. Jozef Haller. This army joined the final Allied drive which defeated the Axis powers and led to the long desired end of the foreign occupation of Poland.
