They were as follows: Recent history suggests that there will be no peace in the Middle East without the United Nations and no United Nations without peace in the Middle East. From its inception the United Nations has been intimately concerned with the Middle East: the legal creation of Israel involved formal action by the United Nations. In the intervening years. the United Nations has adopted a long series of resolutions concerning the Middle East. An official UN body (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency) has the primary responsibility for providing essential services for the refugees. At least a dozen United Nations agencies. commissions and special offices deal with aspects of the Middle East problem. Through three wars in 1948. 1956 and 1967. 20 years of observing four armistices.
