Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920041590

Maybe we cannot do all that we would like to because we are only one country. But we certainly can make the plight of the Soviet Jews vividly apparent to the rest of the world so that pressure can be brought to bear as in the case of the Leningrad trial. We in the United States can take even more concrete humanitarian action by urging our Government to issue additional refugee visas beyond the quota already allotted for the next year. We did not hesitate to take such action at the time of the Hungarian revolution nor should we hesitate today. This issue should not be whether or not the Jews will be permitted to leave.
