Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920017219

Mr. Speaker. I was shocked and greatly dismayed to learn that on March 16. Soviet police invaded U.S. Embassy grounds in Moscow and seized the wife and two children of a Russian doctor who apparently had come to our Embassy merely to seek information about emigration. Fortunately. Embassy employees intervened to save the doctor from the clutches of the Soviets. but his wife and their two young daughters aged 5 and 9 were dragged away screaming by the Russian policemen. Incidents like this are a grim reminder of what life under Communist rule is like. a grim reminder of the fact that the personal freedoms and liberties we enjoy and sometimes take so lightly are beyond the reach of millions of less fortunate human beings.
