It is a fitting occasion. I believe. to call to the attention of this House an injustice which now bars many sons of Erin from joining their forebears in the United States. Due to a largely unexpected result of the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act immigration to the United States from Ireland has been severely curtailed. Between 1956 and 1965. before the new law was enacted. an average of more than 7.000 Irishmen came to the United States annually. Since 1965. however. Irish immigration has declined to less than 2.000 each year. Legislation I have introduced would remedy this deplorable situation. H.R. 166 would place a "floor" under immigration from nations. like Ireland. which are the most adversely affected by the new law.
