Session #91 · 1969–71

Speech #910338420

Mr. Speaker. the story of the attempted emigration of a group of Russian Jews brings into acute focus a situation that has existed in the Soviet Union for many years. We can no longer doubt that for Jews living in Communist Europe. there truly exists an Iron Curtain. closing off for them any hope of leaving a country that treats them with calculated contempt. In Leningrad. 11 Jews have just been declared guilty of attempting to hijack an airplane. and have been sentenced to severe prison terms. This is the ultimate injustice. for anyone with any sensitivity to human suffering recognizes that these people were not planning an act of air piracy in the criminal sense. but were merely trying to escape the suffocating persecution in the Soviet Union.
