This past summer 12 persons. nine of them Jews. were arrested as they boarded an airplane in Leningrad. They were charged with treason. for attempting to leave the country. and hijacking. In an obviously wellcoordinated raid. other Jews throughout the Soviet Union that same day had their homes searched. were rounded up for police questioning or were actually arrested. These persons have been active in the new movement among Soviet Jews to seek emigration visas to Israel and to press for their full religious and cultural rights within the Soviet Union. Now these persons. and others arrested since the summer for similar reasons. are facing trial in the Soviet Union in a "show" atmosphere. Mr.
