Session #91 · 1969–71

Speech #910305842

The textile industry is one of our largest employers of both skilled and unskilled workers in the United States. and it is our Nations biggest rural manufacturing employer. The American textile industry is not seeking preferential treatment. it is asking for fair play by simply being allowed to reasonably compete with exporting countries. The import quota bill is reasonable. Contrary to the vociferous alarms issued by the New York Times and other liberal newspapers that this bill would destroy international trade. its passage would. in fact. put reciprocity back into international trade by demonstrating to foreign nations that this country is no longer going to tolerate an uneven trade policy that works to its economic detriment.
