Session #91 · 1969–71

Speech #910270369

Agriculture is our Nations No. 1 industry. Growers in my congressional district lead the world in productivity. innovation. and progress. Farmworkers in my district. including migrants. receive higher wages. and enjoy better working and living conditions than they can find doing anything else anywhere else in the world. Still this is not good enough and we are trying to improve our produce. our working and living conditions. We have many migrant farmworkers who follow the harveststhey are the poorest of the poor and the most disadvantaged of the disadvantaged. Migrancy is their nemesis. Their wages are not disproportionate to their skills. but the cost of moving and the lack of regular employment caused by the vagaries of the harvests. keep them poor.
