Over 20 major human rights conventions have been adopted by the United Nations. the International Labor Organization. and UNESCO. A few of them are in force among the parties which have acceded to them. Unfortunately. the United States is a party to only two of these: the Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery in 1967 and the convention concerned with the protocol relating to the status of refugees in 1968. Other conventions which have been submitted to the Senate for approval are: the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Convention Concerning Freedom of Association and Protection of the Rights To Organizeboth submitted in 1949 by President Truman.
