Many of these questions were answered in the remarkable speech which Sir Seretse Khama delivered before the United Nations. Botswanas geographic position has not forced it to compromise Its principles where the question of apartheid is concerned. Refugees from the whitedominated governments which surround Botswana are granted asylum in accordance with the United Nations Convention. with the help of the U.N. High Commission they are granted food and shelter. taught skills. and allowed to live in Botswana until such time as an acceptable government permits them to return to their homeland. Nor has economic dependence forced the people of Botswana to refrain from participation in or encouragement of economic sanctions against Rhodesia.
