Dr. Fermi was an Italian immigrant who came to the United States shortly before he won the Nobel prize in physics. He is regarded as one of the greatest physicists of our time and has come to be known as the Architect of the Atomic Age because his experiments in Illinois led in 1942 to the first selfsustaining nuclear chain reaction ever to take place.
