It is instructive to know that the night the first pioneers began their long trek into the West. the temperature was 12� below zero. Because of the severity of conditions. hundreds of pioneers died and were buried in graves along the wagon trails during the ensuing months and years. Upon arriving in Salt Lake Valley the Mormons began immediately to irrigate. plant crops. build forts and houses. explore and colonize thousands of square miles in the wilderness. Additional emigrants arrived by the thousands during the next few decades. The Governor of the territory and pioneer leader. Brigham Young. during the 30 years from 1847 to his death in 1877. directed the establishment of more than 350 communities in Utah.
