Under the Nationalist Government. the islands in 1947 became one of the 35 provinces of China. As the situation on the mainland progressively deteriorated for the Nationalists. Taiwan became a haven for the Nationalist refugees from Communist oppression. with the greatest influx between 1948 and 1950. After suffering military defeat. the Government of the Republic of China reestablished itself on the island of Taiwan in December 1949. The stalwart group of approximately 11/2 million Chinese who retreated with the Nationalist Government and Chiang Kaishek were faced with the formidable task not only of settling in a new homeland but also rebuilding an island devastated by war.
