Speech #900225622

In the past. the Negro entrepreneur has all too often been unable to obtain the bank loans he has needed to set up or expand his small business. First Pennsylvania. cooperating with SBA. is proving that a major bank can take the lead. and in the process do much to assist the growth of business opportunities for Negroes. The small business has in the past been one of the principal upward routes for poor immigrant families in the United States. We are all aware that in recent years there has. been a powerful trend toward larger business units in manufacturing. wholesaling. and retailing. making the small firm. increasingly less able to compete. Nevertheless. there is still a significant place in our economy for the small business firm.
