Session #90 · 1967–69

Speech #900193512

They may have relatives here who are anxious to welcome and help them. We should do all that we can to make such resettlement possible. The bill that I introduce would suspend the numerical limitations of the Immigration and Nationality Act to permit the issuance of Immigrant visas to 5.000 natives and citizens of Italy who have been uprooted by the earthquakes in Sicily. In the interest of fairness and speed. preference would be given to those who have previously applied for immigrant visas and had not yet been admitted only because of the numerical limitations of the act. It will also assure that the pressure on the Italian Governments resources is relieved as promptly as possible. Mr.
