Though North African governments sought to protect their Jewish communities. they were unable to prevent Arab mob passion from exploding into cruel persecutions in Libya. Morocco and Tunisia. (Ironically. Algeriawhich adopted North Africas most strident position during the warwas virtually free of antiJewish incidents.) As a result. since June. 4.500 of Libyas 5.000 Jews have been evacuated to refugee camps in Italy. 10.000 of Moroccos remaining 60.000 Jews have emigrated. and Tunisias 20.000 Jews are fleeing at a rate of 1.000 per month. "This is the beginning of the end for these ancient communities." says a spokesman for the American Jewish Committee which Is trying to expedite their exodus. "One way or another. within the next few years. there will be no Jews left in the Arab world."
