I propose. therefore. that to declare a national holiday in the name of this ideal is part of our task as transmitters of the dream. Declaring the holiday is to remind ourselves of our task. It will not achieve it. But if this holiday contributes to our sense of ourselves as freemen pursuing diverse purposes within the pattern of common respect for diverse purpose. then it will have served its intent. "We are a nation of immigrants" means that we are a nation of dreamers and doers. a nation in which dreamers and doers are at home in the vision of universal brotherhood.
