Speech #890212568

Women received the right to vote in 1907first with limitationsbut finally in 1913 on the same basis as men. The controversial "peasant clause" that allotted 100 of the 150 seats in Parliament to rural areas and 50 to urban election districts was repealed in 1952. reflecting the increasing urbanization of the country. It is ironical that the United States today is faced with a similar situation in reapportionment. As one of the descendants of almost a million Norwegians who have immigrated to the United States. it is heartwarming to know that the United States and Norway stand together on so many international issues seeking to further peace and prosperity around the globe.
