Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890206926

Unfortunately. it has been an opportunity left unused. Instead. the government has demonstrated its opposition to the deep religious tradition of Poland and has returned to the Stalinist methods. One important manifestation of this character has been the refusal of the Communist regime to issue visas permitting prominent clergymen to visit Poland. It is well known that Pope Paul VI was most interested in visiting Poland during the millennium. The government. however. refused to issue an invitation. Further. a number of American clergymen who wished to visit Poland for the celebration have been denied visas by the Polish Government. Among those who have been denied entry are the Catholic hierarchy of my congressional district. Archbishop William E.
