Each time we provided for the public welfare. there was a small monument to PAT McNAMARA in the achievement. Perhaps one reason he understood the common people of America so well is that he was one of them. As the oldest of eight children of Irish immigrants. he was a selfmade man in every sense of the term. He learned his trade as a pipefitter as a 9centanhour apprentice. and and worked his way up to become presidentwithout salaryof the pipefitters local in Detroit. Later he served as the first president of the old Automobile Workers of America. the forerunner of the United Auto Workers.
