Coast Guard and Navy boats and vehicles in the New Orleans area evacuated more than 11.600 persons and transported many tons of food. water. and medical supplies. More than 11.000 homeless persons were sheltered at the naval station and the naval air station during Hurricane Betsy and during its aftermath. Dispensaries at the two naval stations provided emergency treatment to over 1.400 civilian refugees during the first days of the disaster. Medical services were also made available to more than 9.000 additional persons who sought temporary shelter at the naval station. The Army Corps of Engineers were magnificent during this disaster.
