To the people of Illinois he stands as a shining symbol of the best in government. We remember proudly the words with which he welcomed the delegates to the convention of his party in Chicago when he said in 1952: Perhaps you will permit me to remind you that until 4 years ago the people of Illinois had chosen but 3 Democratic Governors in 100 years. One was John Peter Altgeld. the eagle forgotten. an immigrant. one was Edward P. Dunne. whose parents came from Ireland. the last was Henry Homer. who was but one generation removed from Germany. John Peter Altgeld was a Protestant.
