Is among the few distinctive IcelandicAmerican communities remaining in our country. Mr. President. the story of the Icelandic immigration to America is truly a remarkable tale of adventure. struggle. and personal sacrifice. The Icelanders came from a land rural. wild. and lonely. a land of glaciers. lava. heather. and stormy seas. a country of silencethe silence of vast spaces impinging on the scattered settlements. To make their way in comparatively crowded and industrialized America. the immigrants had to summon all their resolution and initiative. The first Icelanders to come to the New World arrived about 1870. They came both to Canada and to the United States. and worked their way along the Great Lakes and the central boundary of the two countries until they settled in North Dakota and Minnesota in about 1900.
