Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890016870

He has been most gracious and helpful in what he said. The Senator mentioned the administration and its attitude with reference to the drain on our gold and balance of payments. I think it would be appropriate for me to call to mind for the record that our administration is asking us to very drastically amend the immigration laws so as to bring in people who are skilled. Yet the Secretary of Labor. by his position. is preventing producing groups. who contribute greatly to the wealth of this country and to our production of local wealth. from obtaining skilled laborers whom we need and who traditionally have served us and have been made available in numbers very much less than the numbers of our own people. but in such number as to greatly affect our prosperity and our ability to handle the entire crop. The administration has several points that it should look at in connection with this problem.
