Speaker. in late 1964. after the adjournment of the 88th Congress. three witnesses were summoned before a subcommittee of the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities in secret session. They were called because of their efforts in 1963 to persuade the State Department and the Attorney General to grant an entry permit to Professor Yasui. a Japanese law professor. who had applied forand subsequently receivedpermission to come to the United States on a speaking tour. The alleged purpose of the subcommittee was the investigation of the enforcement of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. particularly the provision (8 U.S.C. 1182(d) (3)) which empowers the Secretary of State and the Attorney General in their discretion to authorize the admission of aliens who might otherwise be inadmissible. These three witnesses were two women. Dagmar Wilson and Donna Allen. leaders. respectively. of the Women Strike for Peace and the Womens International League for Peace and Freedom. and Russell Nixon. general manager of the National Guardian. a weekly newspaper which was the chief sponsor of Professor Yasuis speaking tour.
