Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880266847

Speaker. in midApril. one of my distinguished colleagues made his weekly radio reports in his area to his constituents. In that report he made certain statements to which I take great exception and to which remarks I object very strenuously. The remarks of my colleague were broadcast over a number of radio stations in Hawaii and contained several references to the PolishAmerican groups in the United States. among which he stated that the PolishAmerican minority group is the second lowest economic group. and that they are "next to the lowest rung of the economic and social ladder against improvement of the lot of those on the lowest rung." He further indicated that the PolishAmericans. as latecoming nonAngloSaxon immigrants. have long been a struggling minority group which has only recently begun to achieve status in American society. that they are concerned by the rise of other groups who were lower than the Pole in the economic structure. I was deeply disturbed about these statements because they are an insult to a wonderful group of people. I am of the firm belief that his remarks were improper. irregular. and totally unnecessary.
