Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880257285

The reaction to the bill has been encouraging. There is a growing recognition that our present military draft system is wasteful. and often unfair. Americans have a long tradition of opposition to the idea of compulsory military service. Our forebears were greatly concerned with governmental interference in the lives of individual citizens. and there is no greater interference than compulsory military service. Many of those who came to this Nation as immigrants were fleeing from compulsory service in the armies of Europe. At times in our history we have resorted to drafting men for military servIce. because it was necessary. No one ever pretended it was desirable.
