I would be less than honest if I did not express the opinion that public respect for Government at the moment is at a low ebb. I would hope the investigation of the Chattanooga proceedings might help restore some of the lost congressional prestige. Not long ago. in this House during consideration of the legislative appropriations bill. there was heated and lengthy controversy over the Judiciary Committees failure to review newspaper charges and rumors of payoffs to fix immigration cases and extortion in connection with gangsters and Communists. Also. there have been frequent protests and almost daily references in our deliberations to cover up facts about Bobby Baker. And. likewise. no one seriously feels that full information about Billie Sol Estes ever came to light.
