Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880200326

Mr. Speaker. there are few American communities which can claim to be the "melting pot" of various nationalities that Milwaukee is. This Wisconsin city was founded and grew strong on successive waves of immigrants from all over the world. but particularly from Central and Eastern Europe. Even today Milwaukee has an unusually large number of individuals considered to be of foreign stock. that is. those who themselves are immigrants or whose parents were immigrants. The problem of assimilation into our American culture and language is still a problem for hundreds of Milwaukee citizens. Assisting in this vital task for decades has been the International Institute of Milwaukee.
