Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880138520

I have been informed by members of the Rumanian Orthodox Church in this country that they have already spent some $200.000 in defending themselves against court actions Initiated. in a similar situation. by the proBucharest group in the RumanianAmerican community. I fear that the American Serbs who refuse to take dictation from Belgrade may have to pay a similar high price for their loyalty to America. Second. it has come to my attention that Americans of the Yugoslav origin applying to the Yugoslav consul in Chicago for visas or for the certification of documents have been asked which side they are on in the Orthodox Church dispute in this. country. the clear implication being that those on the proTito side will be favored. I consider this an intolerable intervention by the Yugoslav authorities in what is essentially an American domestic situation. and I have asked the State Department to look into this matter because of its grave implications. Third. in their desperate efforts to maintain control over the 70odd Serbian Orthodox Church communities in this country and Canada. the Belgrade authorities have threatened to excommunicate Serbian clergymen and laymen who do not accept the control of the Belgrade Synod.
