I have opposed the renewal of Public Law 78 and any further extension of the bracero program in the 87th Congress and in this Congress. On May 29 of this year the House voted against a 2year extension. The reasons for rejecting this program are just as valid now as they were then. The spectacle of the U.S. Government using funds raised by private parties to import contract labor to work on American farms. undercutting American wage standards and depriving American workers of employment. is one we should no longer tolerate. It has the effect of degrading everyone concerned with it. the Mexican bracero. the grower and the American worker. If this program were not concealed. hid away in the rural areas of California.
