Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880110533

This Is plain nonsense. American workers perform exhausting tasks in the coal mines and steel mills and foundries and .oilflelds of our land. -because they are paid -a living %wage. .and will do so also in the fields of our country if the same decentandfair wage:structure were provided. I am -confident that If Public Law 78 is terminated and .a .systematic program of recruitment. transportation. and work contracts--at least similar to what has been offered Mexican nationals for the past .12 yearsis provided for domestic migrant workers. American growers will have no difficulty in hiring more than. enough reliable fieldhands at harvesttime. And when IU.S. farmworkers are assured .decent wages and working conditions. and such longoverdue protections as unemployment and workmens compensation. as well as more adequate housing facilities. then Americas "harvest of shame" will be a thing of the past. and a longstanding blot on our national conscience will have been removed.
