Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880092256

When we take for granted any of these American social advances. we have taken the first step to make them weaker*or even losing them altogether. Fortunately for our national sense of progress. people. or events periodically keep reminding us to be conscious of our heritage and the gains we have achieved through the years. For many generations. immigrants fleeing to our shores from nations governed by autocratic dictatorships. caused us to renew our respect for our everyday liberty and freedom. Those of us who were born American have always had many good lessons in democratic citizenshiplessons taught to us by those who chose to be American citizens. Many of us who have the vote. take it so for granted that sometimes we dont bother to use that precious right to vote on election day.
