Speech #870271431

I would like to call to the attention of my colleagues a speech given by .the junior Senator from Rhode Island at the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Touro Synagogue in Newport. R.I. Senator PELLS address concerned two subjects which were particularly fitting for discussion by the junior Senator from Rhode Island. The first was religious tolerance. Since its founding. Rhode Island has had a distinguished tradition of religious freedom. The Touro Synagogue. in keeping with this tradition. was founded by refugees from religious persecution in the Old World. It is the oldest synagogue in this country. The Senator also discussed the state of communism in the world today.
