Mr. President. June 14 to 21 marked the anniversary of the tragic mass deportations and executions of the peoples of the Baltic States by the Soviet Union in 1941. On February 16. 1918. the Lithuanian nation had reestablished its independence after over a century of Russian domination followed by German occupation during World War I. During her two decades of independence. Lithuania made great economic and social progress as a democratic state with a constitution that guaranteed the basic freedoms of speech. assembly. and religion. With the outbreak of the Second World War. Lithuania had attempted to maintain a policy of absolute neutrality but she was gradually engulfed.
