Speaker. it gives me great pleasure to join with my distinguished colleagues in paying tribute to the Polish people and to the great community of Americans of Polish ancestry on the occasion of this anniversary. The people of Poland have made great contributions to Western civilization. and Kosciusko. Pulaski. and many Polish immigrants played a heroic role in the winning of American independence. Today over 7 million Americans of Polish origin are contributing their full share in maintaining our traditions of freedom and independence. Eight score and eleven years ago. on May 3. 1791. the Polish Diet passed a bill establishing a constitution that would have made Poland a counterpart in the Old World to the rising United States in the New World.
