We are very proud that New York City was chosen as the center of world activity because I can think of no area that better befits the activities of the United Nations. We have housed the delegations of the various countries of the world without any fuss or fanfare. As a cultural. financial. educational. and entertainment center. New York has afforded the various delegates the means whereby they could enjoy to the fullest their diverse leisure moments. New York is the melting pot of the world. it is both the gateway to the West and the welcoming place of the immigrants. It is in New York that stands the Statute of Liberty with the storied words: Keep ancient lands. your storied pomp. Give me your tired. your poor.
