Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870165989

But the proposal relating to the Common Market is probably the most drastic of all. because it would in a few years lead to complete elimination of import duty on some important foreignmade products to the injury of American products. without any offsetting relief. I think it is imperative that we learn the various possibilities. and what is implied in this projected relationship with Europe. There are really two aspects. One relates to trade. The other is political and could produce farreaching consequences. such as unrestricted immigration after a few years. The Treaty of Rome which is the basic agreement on which the Common Market rests. provides for the free movement of workers from country to country. and a common social security. U.S. alinement could extend this to the United States.
