Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870165510

My responsibility as a Senator Is to represent all the citizens of our Statethose who in their wisdom see fit not to vote for me as well as those who do support me. I can assure you that I give the most careful consideration to the expressed views of all our citizens before I discharge the constitutional responsibility of my office which is to make up my mind on any given issue and then vote the position which I believe to be in the best interests of the State and the Nation. Let me say that I write to an American son of a Dutch immigrant as an American son of Irish immigrant parents. I write to you. too. as one who like yourself has done hip share of hard workIn my case as mucker in the mines among other things. I write to you. too. as one who shares your personal concern as to the kind of country which we shall leave to our children.
