Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870152396

Our foreign language press is an aid to progress in meeting this need. At the same time. however. I believe all of us would agree that foreignlanguage publications. when they impede and retard the integration of the foreign born into the American way of life and serve as excuses for failure to learn our languageas they sometimes dothen such publications take on a not so desirable aspect. As instruments for teaching a second language in the United States. they are good. As instruments for impeding the learning of English. they are badfor knowledge of this countrys language is vital to full integration and understanding of our way of life.
