Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870137234

Many of the campaign promises are unfulfilled. Has the situation changed? Is there no longer a need for immigrants in our country? Is there no longer a heartfelt desire on the part of people from many lands. or refugees from Communist tyranny. to come to America? I suggest that we agree now to pass some immigration laws in our next session. We should not evoke promises at campaign time. only to forget them. The problem deserves the serious and sympathetic consideration of all of us. Let us remember the Statue of Liberty. sculptored by an Italian. given to us by France. welcoming immigrants from all over the world to a city founded by the Dutch.
