The Senator from Rhode Island is too valuable a friend to the revision of the immigration laws for me to charge him with anything which would diminish for one instant his capability for fighting for that revision. and I would not do that. The Senator is taking what he can get now. as he has said. As long as the Senate lends itself to the acceptance of what we can get in this way. that is my convictionand very distinguished people have asked me to act. as they have asked the Senator from Rhode Island to act. because they know me as a friend of humanitarian causes and immigration revision. and I am. The only question we face is: When do we want to do something real in this field? It is my conviction that we shall not do it as long as we accept shotgun measures at the end of sessions.
