Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860244614

Lithuania was attacked. overrun. and occupied by the Red army. and then the country became part of the Soviet Union. In attaining their goal. Soviet authorities resorted to some outrageous and inhuman methods. They deported all ablebodied men whom they suspected of opposing Communist dictatorship and enslaved the rest of the population. Even now it is impossible to say how many hundreds of thousands were uprooted from their native Lithuania and. in a mass deportation unprecedented in modern history. were driven to distant parts of the Soviet Union. On this day. 20 years after their deportation. we commemorate that day as one of misfortune and pray for those who died in some desolate part of the Soviet Union.
