Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860243389

Mr. President. the situation in the Middle East is a matter of deep concern for us. There is the problem of the refugees from Palestine. now over 1 million men. women. and children. living in poverty and dependent upon continued grantsmostly from the United States. There is the situation in Iraq. where President Kassim walks a tightrope between Communist influences that have penetrated his government and forces of panArabism which likewise threaten his rule. There is the situation in Jordana country so nonviable that its very survival is dependent upon annual foreign subsidies. There are the occasional clashes between the forces of Israel and those of neighboring states.
