Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860191112

I was shocked. as I am sure all of my distinguished colleagues must have been shocked. to read in the papers and to hear over the radio of the brutal and diabolical slaying of countless Hungarians who. in their unquenchable thirst for freedom. rose against their Soviet and Communist oppressors. The events immediately thereafter shocked the conscience of humanity. Having spent some time in Austria and on the Hungarian border during this period assisting in the effort to relieve the plight of Hungarian refugees. I know firsthand something of the agony that was Hungarys. But in the midst of this dismal picture in the lifeanddeath struggle of the Hungarians for freedom.
