Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860191099

We will not abandon the capitve peoples of Europe for the price of a shortlived peace. a temporary easing of tensions. a lull in the cold war. until. the Soviet domain solidified. we ourselves face the enslavement to which we had abandoned our friends. We will not trade freedom in any part of the world for a promise of ease from tensions that will not be kept. We will not abandon the captive peoSoviet brutality in Hungary that horrified the world and brought to our shores so many refugees. fine men and women who now are a worthy and respected part and parcel of our American fabric. Nor will we permit cooing words of appeasement that now fill the air to soften the verdict of our indignation against the perpetrators of unspeakable crimes on the people of Hungary. Those crimes stunned the world. even in countries that had been neutral. and it is imperative that the United States press with Increasing vigor a demand for drastic action by the United Nations.
