Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860165178

It has been paid in blood. untold sufferings and privations. In 1940 the Soviet Union brutally ended Lithuanias 22 years of independence. which was marked by exemplary economic. cultural. and social gains. and during which time Lithuania demonstrated her ability to take her place among the family of free nations. Lithuania was enslaved despite Soviet treaty pledges of 1920 and similar promises in 1939 to "renounce all rights of sovereignty in the Baltic States." Deportations have not stopped since 1941. In fact the number of exiles have progressively increased every year in order to meet the manpower demanded by Russias labor camps. Lithuania has every right to freedom and independence.
