Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860163459

I introduce. for appropriate reference. a billto amend the act of September 2. 1958. which. as stated in this bill. is 72 Statute For further identification. It was known as S. 3942 when it was on the floor of this Senate in August 1958 and on September 2. 1958. under the Presidents signature it became Public Law 85892. This rendered possible the nonquota admission into the United States of 1.500 refugeestheir spouses and children in additionall victims of the tragic earthquake and volcanic eruptions in Fayal Island in the Azores. The figure of 1.500 was arrived at by the best possible methods and information at the time. It is clear now that in the natural confusion attending the calamity our -estimates fell short of tragic truth. With the praiseworthy expedition of the State Department. the cooperation of the Government of Portugal und the untiring efforts of American organizations dedicated to relieving the plight of the distressed. the quota has been filled. Through December 1959 visas had already been issued to 1.320 refugees with 1.752 spouses and childrena total of 3.072. To our dismay there are still some 500 families who meet the disaster qualifications for admittance. They have started the steps necessary.
